Key Differences Between Shingle Cracking and Splitting

Cracking and splitting are two of the most common types of damage sustained by asphalt shingle roofs. In this post, the top roofing contractor in the area, LePage Sons and Roofing LLC, shares the key differences between these types of damage.

Asphalt Shingle Cracking

Asphalt shingles are composed of volatiles that are designed to bend a little and to protect the underlying roofing components from water intrusion. However, these volatiles will lose their properties over time, potentially causing the asphalt shingle to shrink, dry or crack, requiring  roof repair.

Sustained exposure to heat will make your shingles crack even quicker, also known as craze-cracking. It’s common to see shingles crack due to old age, but if it happens to a brand-new roofing system, it likely means the mixture was crude or that poor-quality materials were used during the installation process. At this point, your best option is to invest in roof replacement.

Asphalt Shingle Splitting

If your roof is exposed to extreme heat, this will cause your shingles to expand. They will then shrink back down once the weather cools. Thermal stress happens due to this ongoing cycle, leading to your shingles splitting. Your shingles could also split due to the quality of the adhesives used on your shingles. Using an extremely strong adhesive will cause your roof to become less resistant to wind shears, causing shingles to split when they come into contact with high winds.
